Open Question

My 21 month old Pugalier Rocky had to be put to sleep on Thursday 21st July. He turned from being a beautiful little puppy into

a very aggressive dog. We could not keep him in our home any longer because he was attacking all family members including myself his owner. Has anybody every heard of this problem with this breed? Unbelievable and heartbreaking. I feel there was something very wrong with him. He has gone to doggy heaven beside our garden shed. Awful.

Answers to this question:

Every breed has its problems when you breed 2 dogs with poor attitudes you get a puppy with a very poor attitude Pugs on there own are actually very over breed and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is also an over breed dog. So after many years over breeding you get dogs that are messed up the puppy your explaining seems like it went through the normal change over breed. dogs are fine until they reach the age where things in their head doesn't click correctly along with that they are breeding 2 dogs that are naturally aggressive but people think their "cute" and its the "new designer breed" which actually they just add the "new designer breed" because people are willing to buy jacked up dogs and way over paying just because its a "new breed" and people wonder why we have so many dogs out in the world that are in shelters and being put down left and right if you want a dog don't get a puppy get a shelter dog their actually better dogs than anything.

if you take 2 poorly bred dogs and cross them you still get poorly bred pup. fyi you know the person you got the pup off of was a bad breeder because no legitimate breeder would cross breeds to make a dog that doesnt have a working purpose. you can give a mixed breed dog a pretty name all you want but its still a Mutt. spaniels are known to be human aggressive and dog aggressive i've grown up around em, and i havent met a Pug i ever liked so if you take two aggressive dogs and breed em together your gonna have an aggressive litter even if your crossing breeds, even though aggression can not be trained out its still manageable. its unfortunate that you had to put your dog down but hopefully next time you will do your research on your breeders. i dont know how much you paid for your dog but i personally wouldnt shell out more than 200 for a mixed breed unless i had a purpose for it. real breeders dont breed for looks its how disorders and faults come out in dogs. also you need to make sure the next bitch you got your dog off of is not over bred, a single breeding is hell on a female any mom can tell you that, and its the same for dogs if the bitch hasnt recovered from its last litter fully it can turn a bad litter. if you do notice the bitch is over bred then you also know that the breeder is only in the dog for the money. things to look for in a good breeder/ litter both parents have been health tested prior to breeding and have been cleared to do so by the vet, make sure the dogs are papered, and make sure that the dog has turned no more than 4 litters in its entire life if the dog your looking at is the 5th litter walk away, do not buy a pup that came off a bitch less than 3 years old in people years (when the dog is fully matured) an imature dog can turn out a bad litter. if the dog has been bred more bred more than once in 2 years walk away. sorry this is really long and its a bit harsh but i really hope it helps and im sorry for your loss

I've always heard that the breed was lovable.
I would think that if aggressiveness was bred into the dog, then he would have shown it early on, when still a pup. It might have been that the dog developed some type of ailment that caused him pain, and pain often causes a dog to act aggressive. If that was the case, then putting him to sleep was a kindness.
My sincerest condolences for the loss of your little pup.
If you decide to get another, I'll go along with the suggestion to get one from the shelter.

aggression isnt always shown at the stage of being a puppy, things can just click or trigger a dogs aggressive gene to turn on, for example i have a german short hair Pointer they are not known to be dog aggressive but at the dog got older she got aggressive towards other dogs. its no that the dogs are bred to be aggressive its poor breeding by people that don't have any business breeding dogs breed 2 aggressive dogs thinking that their puppys will not be human aggressive but in reality they dont consider the science of genetics nor understand it( im not saying every Pug or cav is h.a. or d.a. there are just alot of bad breeders putting out bad dogs and people think their attitudes are cute or funny because the dog thinks its hot stuff and cant do any real damage, if it was a bigger dog with a bad attitude it would have been a problem and the dog would be put down). its got alot to do with over breeding and back yard breeders that dont give a dam about their dogs just a the final profit the fact is any human aggressive dog should be culled(put to sleep) and you did the right thing whether it was sick in pain or what ever if you ask any legitimate breeder whether pit bull breeder, lab breeder, any real breeder they have no use for a human aggressive dog so that dog would be snipped or culled and probably not even sold. also its not a breed its a Mutt. dont get my wrong almost every dog ive owned was a Mutt i love em and some of the best dogs are Mutts but at the same time some of the worst dogs can be Mutts because people that breed Mutts tend to not give a dam about what they're doing or know what they're doing. firm believer in only breeding Mutts for working situations for the fact that one breed may lack a certain trait your looking for in your dog. ive rescued all my dogs except my Pointer. rescue a dog atleast the thing will be health tested

Did you think about posting or getting help before you put your dog to sleep?

I really don't mean to come across as harsh, but what is the point of getting answers now? Before you get another dog, please be ready to commit to being there for them whatever that may mean. There is a lot of help out there. Seek and ye shall find.

I have never heard of Pugs being an aggressive breed. I've had 2, and both were/are the sweetest dogs both to any human they meet as well as any dog. I do agree there are many irresponsible breeders out there though, that have no business breeding in the first place. Over breeding and the deplorable conditions these poor dogs are often living in definitely effect them. Usually it's physically, causing a lot of health problems, but I'm sure it's not uncommon to affect their mental state and temperaments too. I'm so sorry you lost your dog, but maybe you could look into adopting your next pet? There are so many that need loving homes, and these backyard breeders shouldn't be encouraged, IMHO.
